G Scale Model Trains
When it comes to large-scale model trains, one of the groups most favored by model train hobbyists is the G scale group. In fact, when it comes to model trains, the G scale is larger than the others. Of all of the types of model trains used by hobbyists, the G scale is the largest. The G scale model train is 1:22 of an actual train. What this means is that a G scale model train is one twenty-second the size of whatever train it is designed after. Most model trains come in ratios that are much smaller. Take, for example, the O scale (which is also considered a large-scale) model train — it is only 1:48 the size of an actual train, or approximately half the size of a G scale model train. You can expect a G scale model train to be about 6 inches tall and nearly 27 inches in length; the O scale model train, however, is about 3.6 inches tall and only 16.1 inches in length, a baby compared to the G scale. The Lehmann Gross Bahn (LGB), or ‘Lehmann Big Train’ is what the company that pioneered the G scale train is often referred to, although the actual company name was Ernst Paul Lehmann Petentwerk. This company was founded back in 1881, and even had an American branch known as LGB of America.
G scale model trains got their name from the fact that because of their size they were commonly referred to as “Garden Railroading” trains. The G is also short for the word ‘big’ in German, or groβ, which ties into the fact that the model train is of German make. G scale model trains, like the other large-scale model trains, run on a #1 gauge railway track. The #1 track has a width of 45 mm between the rails.
Because these #1 gauge tracks are so durable, they are perfect for use outside in the garden or on a patio. The #1 tracks for G and other large-scale model trains are generally made of brass. The owner is required to do very little by way of maintenance. All it takes is a wipe of the tracks with a clean cloth to make them ready for the large-scale model train enthusiast to use once again. Depending on the make up and purpose of the model train, G scale model trains are also suitable for using inside.
For the best American made G scale model trains, you need to look for Bachmann or Aristocraft.
The durability of the G scale model train is a big reason for their popularity. This is a model train that parents can give to their children realizing that the child will be able to play with it for years to come. Parents and children can also make G scale model trains a family hobby that everyone enjoys together. While small children may have a difficult time being gentle enough with a small scale train, like an N scale (about 1 inch in height and maybe 5 inches in length), parents can rest assured that a G scale train is one that they can handle with no problem.
Because model trains have been around for so long, there are now trains which are made for every purpose and of every size you can imagine. G scale model trains, of course, are among them.
